The 6% per annum growth is twice that of the polymer industry in general

The growth rate for polymer distribution is averaging 6% per annum, at least twice the rate for the European polymer industry as a whole.

UK research group AMI Consulting says the growth rate is even higher in certain sectors. European polymer distributors sold more than 3 million tonnes of polyolefins, styrenics and selected engineering polymers in 2003, accounting for 12% of the European market.

AMI’s report also highlights the fact that seven companies account for more than 50% of the volume of polymer distribution in Europe. The last time the study was carried out in 2001, the top seven companies had a 33% share in volume terms (and 38% in value terms).

AMI acknowledges that the industry has gone through some important changes. Relationships with polymer producers continue to be critical to the future development of the industry, it says.
