The Cefic survey revealed more people think positively than negatively

Positive views about the chemicals industry outweigh the negatives for the first time since the annual survey by Brussels-based Cefic began in 1992. The latest study, carried out earlier this year, showed 48% of the European public taking a positive view against 44% with the reverse opinion.

The image study also showed that chemicals’ position among eight benchmark industries has improved one rung from seven to six, putting it ahead of the oil and nuclear energy industry.

For the first time in the history of the study, the public gave a positive rating to three key parameters, controlling pollution, protecting safety of neighbours and employees and reducing HSE risks. The survey, held among 9,000 respondents, showed a trend towards a more business friendly climate. But it was with a declining belief in companies’ ethical and socially responsible behaviour.

The most frequently mentioned benefit of the chemicals industry among respondents was “products that enhance the quality of life” highlighted by one third. Responses on the use of plastics packaging showed that the sector link with chemical products in the public’s eyes is extremely tenuous.
