The polymer composite trailer is 400kg lighter than the steel equivalent

UK scientists and engineers have developed a composite truck trailer, which is lighter and as strong as a conventional steel chassis. The research is part of the government-backed Foresight vehicle initiative. The trailer, manufactured from polyester resin and glass fibre, can carry a larger payload than a comparable steel chassis trailer. It could increase the transport industry’s productivity and reduce environmental and infrastructure damage.

Use of the composite trailer could see a reduction in HGV journeys, an increase in fuel efficiency and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, according to Foresight Vehicle.

The project’s lead partner was Leicestershire-based Euro-Projects (EPL). Other partners included Southfields Coachworks, Vosper Thornycroft, Leyland Technical Centre and the University of Nottingham.

Two prototypes have been built. Gerry Boyce, managing director of EPL told PRW.com improvements to the second prototype made it 20% more rigid and 400kg lighter than a comparable steel-chassis unit.
