Exatec says its polycarbonate system is 'the answer to market demand for weatherability'Exatec says its polycarbonate system is 'the answer to market demand for weatherability' Exatec has introduced a polycarbonate glazing system for cars, which it claims can withstand more than 10 years of outdoor exposure. Exatec global business development manager Dr Peter Reisinger told PRW.com: “Exatec900 is an answer to market demand for weatherability. It gives a significant improvement in weathering performance, achieved by a proprietary weathering layer. “It also has the advantages of Exatec500, which include excellent abrasion and scratch resistance.” He added: “By 2007-2008, assume there will be a significant amount of [automotive polycarbonate glazing] applications on the market.” Dr Reisinger said the first use would be in panoramic roofs, followed by applications at the rear of the vehicle. Polycarbonate glazing applications would then move “slowly forward to the side of the vehicle”. Advantages of polycarbonate glazing over glass include a weight reduction of up to 50%, three-dimensional windows and lower complexity during assembly, according to the company, a joint venture between Bayer MaterialScience and GE Advanced Materials.
