With the 2003 targets met, Vinyl 2010 believes the 2005 targets are possible

The European PVC industry has met its recycling and sustainability targets in 2003, according to the latest progress report from Vinyl 2010. A number of major projects were launched during the year, in particular regarding the collections and recycling of roofing products, pipes and window profiles. Final preparations are also underway for the PVC waste recycling facility at Signaes in Denmark.

Hydro Polymers environmental spokesman and Vinyl 2010 member Mikkel Heiberg Storm said: “The annual report reveals the PVC sector in Europe is making an active effort to establish processes and supply products that are sustainable throughout their entire lifecycle, including those that have fulfilled their primary purpose.” Vinyl 2010 secretary-general Jean-Pierre De Grève added: “I believe the 2005 targets are now within reach. There is still a lot of work to do, but this is an excellent result.”

Storm is travelling to Budapest next week to establish contact with the PVC industry in the new EU member states. “One of our commitments is to include the industries of the 10 new EU member states in Vinyl 2010. This is not so straightforward, since the industrial and environmental standards in these countries are not at the same level,” Storm said.
