A Pifa survey has revealed that retailers are making the most money

The plastics packaging films industry is earning the lowest returns in the polymer-to-retailer supply chain, Pifa chairman Dick Searle said this week. Speaking to an audience of 300 at the Packaging and Industrial Films Association’s 31st annual luncheon in London, Searle said the conclusion had emerged from a recent survey.

“Perhaps not surprisingly, by far the greatest returns were made at the retailer end of the chain,” Searle said. The survey showed that the returns made by both polymer suppliers and converters were too low to justify any significant level of reinvestment, he added.

The level of government regulation also came under fire from the recently retired Britton chief. “There are more and more regulations and although there is talk about reductions in red tape, there is no evidence of any change,” he said.

Searle stepped down from his Pifa role this week after a two-year stint. Steve Griffin of Klockner Pentaplast succeeds him as chairman.
