BMW says nanomaterials will help it introduce new propertiesBMW says nanomaterials will help it introduce new properties Nanomaterials could open up new application and products in the automotive industry, according to leading carmaker BMW. The group said developing nanomaterial applications was a key future challenge, along with ongoing attempts to reduce vehicle weight, comply with environmental legislation and develop better safety systems. Rudolf Stauber, director of operating strength and materials development at BMW’s Landshut plant in Germany said: “Nanomaterials will help us to introduce new properties into cars.” He said that tough nanomaterial coatings will help to prolong the lifetime of external components by preventing soiling and scratching. They could also be used to coat transparent components – such as helmet visors or headlamps – to reduce reflectance. “I’m convinced that nanomaterials will play an important role in the future of car manufacturing,” he said.
