A majority of ministers voted to remove the tax that was introduced in 2000A majority of ministers voted to remove the tax that was introduced in 2000 The Danish parliament yesterday voted to abolish the tax on rigid PVC products. A majority of 60 ministers voted in favour of the bill to remove the tax, with 48 in opposition. The tax on some products containing phthalates and some rigid PVC building products – notably gutters, roofing and cable trays – was introduced in 2000. The levy was set at around E1/kg for phthalates and E0.25/kg for PVC sold within Denmark. PVC Information Council director Ole Grøndahl Hansen said: “It is a very favourable for the Danish PVC trade that the bill is now finally passed. We now have a situation where the majority of PVC products are not subject to taxation. It should mean a promotion in the marketing of rigid PVC products.” The decision follows the council’s introduction of collection and recycling systems to deal with waste PVC products. It is now working to eliminate the tax on flexible PVC products. “For soft PVC we have to make a similar system to make sure that soft PVC is collected and recycled,” Grøndahl Hansen said.
