The housings of plasma screen television sets, in particular, are subjected to very high temperatures during prolonged use. Philips chose Bayer's Bayblend® FR 2010 compound for its ability to withstand the high temperatures involved and also because its halogen-free composition enables the sets to comply with certain environmental regulations. At a long term service temperature of 85°C, the housing is said to remain dimensionally stable. According to Bayer, Bayblend FR 2010 complies with the strict fire safety regulations in place in the USA and Japan, namely Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 94 V-0. It says all the specifications of the regulation are met down to a wall thickness of 1.5 mm. The compound is designed to flow easily to provide injection moulders with a broad processing window. Bayer adds that the good coatability and surface adhesion give finished products an excellent surface finish, and there are a number of options for post-treating the compound.
