High-tech material from Bayer for better images| Subj: Press-releses Smartphones have long been a popular choice for photography, too. The focus now is on further improving the image quality, for example with better flashes. A particularly high-performance plastic from Bayer is helping to make this possible, resulting in photos with greater clarity and truer colors. At this year’s photokina in Cologne, the leading international imaging trade fair, the camera phones are sharing the spotlight with "action cameras." Materials from Bayer make these products exceptionally rugged and safe. In the smartphone segment, demand is growing for products that deliver top-quality photos. As a result, LED lenses for camera flashes are becoming increasingly important. Bayer MaterialScience has therefore developed a material solution that extends the service life of the lenses. Conventional materials, by comparison, are softer and therefore more easily damaged. Not only that, the Bayer innovation also improves image quality. Crystal clear and optimal formability The plastic behind this is Apec®, a special polycarbonate that combines a range of properties such as light weight, good formability, high transparency and, particularly important, outstanding heat resistance. Polycarbonate, which Bayer invented some 60 years ago, is also being used in the action camera segment. These cameras are most commonly used for capturing images of outdoor activities. Sports cameras that are particularly well-suited for challenging sports such as surfing and snowskating feature numerous components made from the plastic, including the waterproof housing that enables dives of up to 60 meters.
