Manufacturer and two suppliers share the ‘best in show’ accolade for the co-extruded polycarbonate in-mould film

The removable hardtop roof panels of the MCC Smart Roadster vehicle has won the top prize at the Society of Plastics Engineers’ 33rd annual innovation awards.

Manufacturer DaimlerChrysler, system supplier ArvinMeritor and materials supplier GE Plastics shared the “best in show” award for the development. Chairman of the SPE event Stuart Cohen said: “This application combines all of the necessary attributes of weight and cost savings, and new design and materials technology to make it truly innovative.”

Other awards made to European applications included one to BMW, converter Seeber Systemtechnik and Quadrant Plastic Composites for the long glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic undershield of the BMW 5 series car.

French plastics processor Inoplastic and materials supplier MCR Composites were awarded for load floors at Renault, as were BMW, Pierburg and Vyncolit for a continuously variable intake manifold.
