Cadbury is using a corn starch polymer

A major confectionery firm plans to use a biopolymer in the packaging of its new range of chocolates. Cadbury will use a corn starch polymer for the chocolate tray in its Milk Tray range. The material is fully biodegradable, and degrades immediately on contact with water.

The polymer will be supplied by Australian firm Plantic Technologies. A spokeswoman told PRW.com that the biopolymer would initially be used in Australia. She said the polymer competed with plastics such as PVC, and the company had found the same gauge of material gave an equivalent strength.

She added that standard extrusion and converting equipment was used to manufacture the material.
