Highly transparent casting compounds from Bayer

 |  Subj: Press-releses

Bayer MaterialScience offers raw materials for highly transparent casting compounds that can be used to seal lighting strips and other lighting elements with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This gives the LEDs long-lasting, effective protection against moisture, weather and cleaning agents. The development is part of an extensive program of material solutions for energy-efficient lighting technologies that Bayer MaterialScience is showcasing at the Light + Building tradeshow in Frankfurt.

The casting compounds are formulated from solvent-free, aliphatic Desmodur® and Desmophen® grades. The two liquid components are combined shortly before processing and then the LED strips required are cast. The compound hardens to create a highly transparent casting that completely embeds the LEDs. The specific selection of the two components enables the consistency of the material to be adjusted from highly flexible to very hard. This allows production of high-quality lighting elements for an extremely wide range of applications using a broad array of design options.

Aliphatic polyisocyanates and polyols from the two ranges are established raw materials for brilliant and extremely resistant coatings. They are now also lending their excellent properties to molded parts. The molded parts are crystal clear, lightfast and highly resistant to chemicals and mechanical stress. Their properties can also be largely tailored to suit specific requirements thanks to the wide range of raw material grades available.

Bayer MaterialScience expects the casting compounds to also help LED strips make inroads in the future in bathrooms, saunas, swimming pools, external facades and gardens.
