Turkey remains bullish about the prospects for its industry, growing by a record 35% last year.

Pagev, the Turkish plastics industry association, estimates that polymer consumption will increase to 6.6 million tonnes by 2010. The commodity polymers (PPE, PP, PVC, PS) constitute the majority of consumption.

Turkey’s current annual polymer consumption of 2.8 million tonnes ranks sixth in Europe just behind Spain. The per capita consumption is now 40kg but when this reaches 75-100kg – the level of developed countries – Pagev believes Turkey will become a significant player in the world plastics industry with its 69 million population.

The major plastics segments are packaging and construction material, while the automotive and appliance industries are also rapidly expanding.

Turkey ranks second in synthetic fibres and third in PVC profiles production capacities in Europe. It has significant BOPP manufacturing industry.
