Bayer MaterialScience at Compamed : Innovative material solutions for wound care and medical technology| Subj: Press-releses With its broad range of material solutions for medical technology, Bayer MaterialScience is a key contributor in this field. At Compamed 2012, the company will be showcasing a series of current developments at Stand H30 in Hall 08b. Focal areas will be wound treatment and the manufacture of medical devices. The range of materials includes polyurethane raw materials, thermoplastics and films. Rapid wound healing with a minimum of pain is equally important for patients, health insurers and medical personnel. Modern wound management reduces treatment times or allows patients to be moved from in-patient to out-patient, thus reducing nursing effort and costs. At Compamed 2012, Bayer MaterialScience will be showcasing a new aliphatic polyurethane foam based on Baymedix® FP reactive foam technology. The raw material enables the production of very smooth and conformable foams that are non-yellowing, thus maintaining their white color over time. Their high absorption rate, together with the greatest fluid retention capability, fits the moisture management requirements of advanced wound dressings very well. The foams can be coated with a skin-friendly, two-component adhesive made from Baymedix® A raw materials that is solvent-free and likewise based on aliphatic polyurethane chemistry. Thanks to their hydrophilic nature and adjustable adhesive strength, the adhesives can be used for a variety of applications in modern wound care. Appropriately adjusted, these formulations can be removed as gently from the skin as silicone adhesives currently on the market today. Baymedix® A materials have been used by leading wound dressing brands for more than 15 years. Epurex Films, a subsidiary of Bayer MaterialScience, offers films made from thermoplastic polyurethane under the Platilon® trade name. They are tailor-made for use as soft, thin-film protective coverings and are characterized by controlled water vapor transmission, high flexibility and a matte surface. This ensures a high wearing comfort and an unobtrusive wound coverage. With these products, Bayer MaterialScience is a one-stop shop for the complete range of polyurethane materials for modern wound treatment, from the protective coating to the foam to the adjustable adhesive. Thermoplastic materials such as Bayblend® M850XF, a blend of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, are well suited for the production of housings for medical equipment. Like most other thermoplastics developed by Bayer MaterialScience for the medical technology sector, this product is characterized by very good impact strength and rigidity. The product also fulfills the requirements of certain biocompatibility tests according to ISO 10933-1 and to USP (United States Pharmacopeia) Plastics Class VI. With 2011 sales of EUR 10.8 billion, Bayer MaterialScience is among the world’s largest polymer companies. Business activities are focused on the manufacture of high-tech polymer materials and the development of innovative solutions for products used in many areas of daily life. The main segments served are the automotive, electrical and electronics, construction and the sports and leisure industries. At the end of 2011, Bayer MaterialScience had 30 production sites and employed approximately 14,800 people around the globe. Bayer MaterialScience is a Bayer Group company.
