Finnish plastic pipes manufacturer Uponor has decided to close a Hungarian factory with the loss of 45 jobs.

The factory in Szekszard in south-west Hungary makes pipe systems for municipal sewer, gas and water markets. It and its related sales office in Budapest will be shut.

Uponor said it had decided to close the “unprofitable” site, which has made annual net sales of less than E10m. The firm said the closure would not affect its Budapest-based Housing Solutions business.

A spokeswoman told PRW.com the shutdown was part of a strategy announced earlier this year that has also seen the closure of two sites in Germany.

Products would be supplied to the Hungarian market from sites in the UK and Germany, the spokeswoman added.

Uponor set up the Szekszard site after it moved into the market in 1992. The spokeswoman said the firm was not looking for a buyer.
