Big expansion of PET resin capacity

Big expansion of PET resin capacity

A large investment in PET packaging resin production will make Gruppo Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) the second largest supplier in the world after Eastman Chemical.
Expansion at M&G's Altamira site will create the world's largest single line plant with capacity of 275,000 tonnes, bringing M&G's global capacity close to one million tonnes.
The Italian family-owned M&G group acquired Shell's PET and PEN business in 2000. In addition to Altamira, it has PET resin production facilities at Point Pleasant, USA; three sites in Italy; and Crystal Polymers, in the UK, currently mothballed.
Demand for PET in Mexico rose by 15% last year due to its late entry to the sector and its status as the second largest consumer of soft drinks in the Americas, says M&G.
Now estimated at 420,000 tonnes/year, the Mexican market is larger than the established PET markets in the UK and Italy.
M&G's polymers business unit CEO, Marco Ghisolfi, said Mexico will require significant additional supply of PET resin in the near future. The investment demonstrates the group's confidence in PET and the growth of M&G's strategic customers, he said.
