Japanese company's infant polyamide bottlesJapanese company's infant polyamide bottles Japan's JEX Company has pioneered the use of polyamide to manufacture baby bottles in 150 ml and 240 ml capacities, thereby offering an alternative to the breakable glass and PC bottles that have been dogged by bisphenol-A content. The transparent polyamide is produced by EMS-Grivory, a subsidiary of EMS-Chemie AG. EMS offers two colourless co-polyamides, namely Grilamid TR 90 and TR 55, that are resistant to sterilisation temperatures, impact and chemicals. Explained Daniel Capaul, the company's Market Development Manager: "Grilamid satisfies the market demands for bisphenol-free material and has been successfully introduced in Asia by JEX baby bottles." Capaul added that because of its low density of 1.0g/cm3, which is 17% lighter than PC and 33% lighter than PES, the TR 90 could be used to produce lightweight bottles. As a result of its amorphous polymer structure, the TR 55 has a higher stiffness while retaining sufficient impact resistance. It is approved by the American FDA for use in direct contact of food and for beverages with an alcohol content of up to 8%, giving rise to a wide variety of uses for this polyamide grade.
