Mercury Packaging acquire Certiforms

In line with an ambitious growth strategy, Mercury Packaging – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of innovative, high quality and cost effective flexible packaging for the mailing, magazine publishing, retail, security and fulfilment markets – is delighted to announce the acquisition of food packaging specialist Certiforms.

This major investment is the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at expansion and will boost Mercury’s turnover by £1.2 million. It will allow the Nottinghamshire-based company to offer enhanced print capabilities, production efficiencies and technical expertise, as well as significantly increase its presence in the food industry, with particular focus on the bakery and fresh produce sectors.

Commenting on the acquisition, Tony Stanger, Mercury Packaging’s Managing Director said: “We are very excited about the acquisition of the Certiforms business and believe it will have a positive impact on customers, employees and suppliers. It is a natural fit with Mercury and enables us to offer enhanced production and print capacity together with strengthened service levels and technical excellence. It also allows us to quickly penetrate the previously untapped food industry.”

Certiforms currently operates from a facility in Macclesfield where it manufactures high quality wicketted bags in a wide range of sizes, thicknesses and substrates including low and high density polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), co-extruded films, and polyester. Bags are provided plain or printed in up to eight colours.

In addition, a range of styles and options are available. Certiforms’ bags can be supplied as gusseted or non-gusseted; tear-off perforations; punched handles; ventilation perforations; re-sealable tapes; captive flap; perforated openings and blockheaded.

Mercury specialises in the supply of high clarity PP films for display purposes as well as a variety of PE film specially designed to provide the strength and impact qualities required for protection. It has recently added a range of laminates to supplement its single ply films for the food packaging sector.

As well as a dedicated print room housing its recently installed £1.3 million eight-colour gearless print press, and extensive warehousing facilities, Mercury’s 33,000 sq ft production plant comprises a conversion hall which operates eight advanced converting machines producing simple glue line bags; point of sale, bank note and coin bags; high security bags; and mailing and courier envelopes.

The company is also a market leader in security and track & trace features including sequential numbering, bar coding, and tamper resistant and tamper evident closure systems.

Established in 1999, Mercury employs some 50 people at its site in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and has a current turnover of £5 million.
