Rohm and Haas jv in China begins operations

Rohm and Haas, the acrylic polymer additives major based in Philadelphia, US, and PVC additive producer Weihai Jinhong Polymer Company have started operations at their joint venture company, JinHaas.

Based at Jinhong’s Weihai City plant in Shandong province, China, JinHaas will produce methacrylate butadiene styrene (MBS), acrylic impact modifiers (AIMs) and acrylic processing aids.

The plant’s output will supply additives to China’s construction industry and PVC packaging market.

In what could be seen as a response to safety concerns over some Chinese produced products, most recently highlighted by the Mattel toy recalls, Xu Dongguo, president of Weihai Jinhong, said: “Strong brand reputation, a well ordered distribution network, extensive product and process technology, and the significant environmental, health and safety experience of Rohm and Haas Company is expected to provide the most reliable guarantee to the healthy operation of JinHaas.”

When announcing the collaboration in December 2006, Joan Schuller, general manager for Rohm and Haas Asia Pacific region, said this joint venture would make it the first multinational company with a “significant manufacturing footprint of plastic additive polymer in China.”

Rohm and Haas hold a 51 per cent stake in JinHaas.
