Chemicals group Yule Catto has announced the closure of its Holliday Pigments subsidiary’s factory in Kingston-upon-Hull, UK, resulting in the loss of 95 jobs.
Holliday Pigments has long been a mainstay of the UK colourants industry, having manufactured its trademark ultramarine blue pigments – used in plastics and other applications – in Kingston-upon-Hull for 120 years.
Yule Catto said its restructuring plan would involve the progressive transfer of pigment production from the factory to another Holliday facility in Comines, France. This would ultimately lead to the closure of the Kingston-upon-Hull factory and the affected employees are now in a 30-day consultation period.
Yule Catto has been undertaking a group-wide restructuring aimed at improving profitability. In May, it formed a division which grouped Holliday Pigments with speciality chemical subsidiaries William Blythe and James Robinson, which have also been subject to closures.
The group said its Synthoma water-based polymer business, which makes dispersions used in PVC and other applications, has been delivering a strong performance and profit growth in 2006.
