FDA-approved Biomax grade improves toughness of PLA food packaging.

DuPont Packaging has introduced an FDA-approved version of its Biomax Strong performance enhancing additive for polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics, such as Cargill’s NatureWorks resin. The Biomax Strong 120 grade is claimed to overcome the natural brittleness of PLA food packaging, providing improved toughness with a minimal reduction in clarity. According to DuPont, the FDA-approved version of the modifier complies with US and European food contact regulations.

"Offering a food contact compliant grade of Biomax(R) Strong gives DuPont a way to help food marketers take better advantage of an environmentally preferred solution in packages such as clamshells used in fresh produce sections," says global market manager for DuPont Packaging, Shanna Moore.

DuPont launched its first Biomax additive in September last year. The petrochemical-based additive enhances the impact strength, flexibility and melt stability of PLA products. Compliance with international composting requirements is maintained when used at recommended addition levels, the company says.

The workings of the US and European food contact regulatory systems will be explained and updated at EPN’s Food Contact Plastics conference in Brussels next month
