20 April 2007 – Basell has sold the 50th licence for its Lupotech T low density polyethylene technology. The milestone customer is Qatar Petrochemical Co (Qapco), a joint venture between industries in the Gulf state and Total Petrochemicals, which will use it on a 250,000tpa LDPE plant to be built at Mesaieed for start up in 2011.
Welcoming the company’s latest licensing success, Technology Business president Just Jansz said: “The Middle East requires world scale plants to take full advantage of the abundant availability of feedstock for petrochemicals. Scale is one of the advantages offered by Basell’s Lupotech T technology, in combination with demonstrated product capability, thus offering excellent manufacturing economics and a broad range of high quality products.”
Lupotech T is a high pressure tubular reactor process for the production of LDPE and EVA co-polymers. Basell has licensed 14 plants using this technology since 2000 and a total of more than 7m tpa of licensed capacity.
