Romanian plastics industry set for growth

11 April 2007 – The Romanian plastics processing industry has “huge potential” for growth, according to a report from European Plastics Converters, the Brussels-based industry body.

EuPC has published the study on the Romanian plastics industry in conjunction with Aspaplast, the Romanian trade association. It has found there are about 600 plastics converting plants in the country, with total production capacity of 500,000tpa of plastic products.

West European OEMs from the automotive, food processing and construction sectors have already found their way to Romania, and leading converters are likely to follow them, according to EuPC.

Following accession to the EU, structural funds will become available in Romania by the end of the year, helping to raise competitiveness in general, and the plastics industry in particular, along with increasing investment opportunities.

Extrusion of film products accounts for the largest consumption of plastics in Romania, followed by injection moulding and pipe and profile extrusion. The need for infrastructure renewal in road construction and house building provides a large potential market for plastics pipes.

The report is published after a visit to Aspaplast by EuPC managing director Alexandre Dangis. He announced a special event on EU regulatory issues will be organised in September to help Romanian companies understand all legal obligations imposed by Brussels.
