31 January 2007 – Contracts have been awarded for construction of Saudi Kayan Petrochemical’s two polyolefins plants in Saudi Arabia.
Samsung Engineering will build a 350,000tpa polypropylene plant and Simon Carves has won the contract for a 300,000tpa LDPE plant.
Saudi Kayan was established by Sabic and Kayan Petrochemical to build a complex at Al-Jubail Industrial City. Sabic holds 35% of the company and Kayan holds 20%. The remaining 45% will be offered for public subscription.
The complex at Al-Jubail is expected to go live in 2009 with an annual capacity exceeding 4 million tonnes of chemical products.
Polycarbonate will also be produced at the complex, alongside ethylene, propylene, polypropylene, ethylene glycol, polyethylene and other products.
These are expected to provide opportunities for creation of downstream industries.
