British Polythene Industries shuts UK site

29 January 2007 – British Polythene Industries (BPI) intends to close its site in Scunthorpe, UK, with the “probable” loss of 39 jobs.

Part of the BPI films division, the site produced film for produce and deep freeze applications.

David Pendlebury, BPI’s md, told PRW.com “the losses had got worse in 2006” and consolidation was the only conclusion. “We don’t give up a skilled labour force lightly,” he added.

The company is currently engaged in a 30-day consultation period with employees.

Pendlebury said the Scunthorpe work would be kept in the UK, with machinery taken to other BPI sites.

High energy prices were a key factor in the decision, as well as reduced market demand. According to Pendlebury, energy costs for the Scunthorpe factory have doubled.
