22 January 2007 – The Egyptian Propylene and Polypropylene Company (EPPC) has selected Basell’s Spheripol technology for its 350,000tpa PP plant to be built near Port Said, Egypt.
EPPC, which is a joint venture owned by Oriental Petrochemical Company (OPC), Oriental Weavers and ECHEM, is investing some US$680m in the new complex and has commissioned engineering firm Uhde to build it.
The new PP plant is expected to come on stream in 2009.
The complex will also include propane dehydrogenation plant, also with a capacity of 350,000tpa, using Star technology licensed by Uhde.
According to Uhde, propane from Egyptian natural gas deposits will be used as the feedstock. “This is the first time that our proprietary Star process will be used for the commercial-scale production of propylene from propane,” said Klaus Schneiders, chairman of Uhde’s executive board.
