Mid East success for Bobst group’s UK arm

4 December 2006 - The UK flexible materials arm of the Bobst Group has won a £6m order from the United Arab Emirates for the slitting, rewinding and metallizing of BOPET film.

Three primary and four secondary Atlas slitter rewinders, together with roll handling systems and a General Vacuum Equipment metallizer, will be installed next year at a new plant being constructed by JBF-RAK LLC, a joint venture between India’s polyester chip manufacturer JBF Industries and the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority of the UAE.

The plant will have a capacity of 300tonnes of BOPET film per day. Two of the primary computer controlled Atlas slitters are 8.7metres wide and the other 4.2metres wide. They are centre-type winders, featuring automatic or manual knife positioning and rewind arm positioning. The high-speed machines will operate at rewind diameters up to 1,200mm and are integrated with three-reel handling systems. The secondary slitter rewinders include two Atlas CW800 machines and will be used for narrow width slitting of both plain and metallized film.

The film plant in the UAE is part of a $90m investment in polyester resin chips and BOPET. Product will be largely exported, to the US, EU, China and other parts of Asia. Bobst is a Swiss company that acquired Atlas Converting Equipment and General Vacuum Equipment three years ago.
