21 November 2006 – BASF and Dow Chemical are to carry out a joint feasibility study into the construction of the biggest plant for PU intermediate toluene diisocyanate (TDI) ever built. The unit would be located in Europe and the site would be one of the subjects of the study along with technology and infrastructure.
The two chemical giants have already cooperated in a plant to produce propylene oxide through a new technology based on hydrogen peroxide, on which ground was recently broken at BASF’s Antwerp site (PRW.com 27 September 2006).
Pat Dawson, business vice president of Dow Polyurethanes, says the two partners can create “a world class TDI facility that has outstanding economic and technological competitiveness.” BASF Polyurethanes Division president Jacques Delmotiez adds that the combination will enhance their ability to serve customers.
Both BASF and Dow have been operating European plants for the manufacture of TDI, which is used mainly in flexible foams. However, Dow’s unit, at Porto Marghera, near Venice, was recently shut down triggering industrial action.
