Solvay works with part maker

Solvay Advanced Polymers and aircraft component maker Magee Plastics in the US have linked up to provide what they see as a unique plastics aftermarket offering airlines components in Radel R and Torlon components.

Up to now, the partners say, an airline’s only option for performance plastics parts was through the plane’s manufacturer since, while metal and composites parts had an after market, plastics have had no such facility. The opportunity emerged after the two companies were working together on a cabin conditioning program for Delta Airlines recently. “Working with Magee Plastics and Solvay Advanced Polymers, we were able to realise considerable costs savings by having a source of quality, specified performance plastics parts,” said John Laughter, vp for maintenance & operations at Delta Airlines.

The replacement parts covered by the system include window assemblies, air return grilles and a number of other items. “Our aftermarket efforts will now allow access to the most advanced plastics available,” said Jason Ross, business manager for Solvay Advanced Polymers.
