An electronic connector for Tyco is made with a 30% glass reinforced grade

BASF has found a new application for its nanocomposite-modified easy flow PBT. Electronics company Tyco has used a 20% glass fibre reinforced grade of BASF’s High Speed material to make a nine-pole electronic connector. The new material replaces a 15% glass filled standard grade of PBT, which had led to filling problems.

Switching to the new grade also cut reject levels and reduced tool wear, according to Mark Völkel of BASF’s technical marketing department. The High Speed materials are now available with 20% and 30% levels of glass fibre reinforcement. The base polymer has also been extended to include PBT/ASA and PA/PBT blends. Laser writing versions are also available in black.

BASF also revealed that Bosch is evaluating the material for a steering angle sensor application, in which it has shown 50% better flow properties than standard PBT.
