Coca-Cola Enterprises is one company involved in the Wrap-funded trials

Coca-Cola Enterprises and other major groups are taking part in UK packaging research projects funded by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (Wrap). The projects are part of the £8m (E12m) Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund, which is designed to encourage innovative packaging initiatives that reduce household waste. Coca-Cola Enterprises is carrying out trials of redesigned and lighter weight 500ml PET carbonated drinks bottles. The trials will also include testing the feasibility of using recycled PET in the reduced weight bottles.

In another project, Dairy Crest and Sainsbury’s are jointly conducting a trial of new minimal packaging for some of their milk products. Procter & Gamble has also received funding for the trialling of six plastic containers, designed to be lighter weight using a computer modelling and simulation system. The containers are for some of the group’s leading liquid household products, including Ariel, Lenor, Flash and Bold. Wrap is now accepting applications for the next round of funding. Companies have until 20 April to make an application based on a packaging innovation project.
