DR-Pack has used a patented die and cooling technology to improve performance

A Hungarian packaging film converter has slashed production costs using a patented blown film die. DR-Pack, which specialises in flexible packaging films, developed the die in order to smooth out variations in thickness in its food wrap.

“We have used the die to get rid of defects in thickness variation,” says Tamás Illés, development engineer at DR-Pack. “The die corrects these defects automatically.” The company says that the die – which has a rotating core – helps to cut variation from 20% to just 2-3%. This allows it to produce thinner film without losing quality.

The thickness tolerance is also improved by DR-Pack’s patented cooling technology – it cools the film bubble more efficiently, says the company, which allows the line to be run faster. The company estimates that the new technology has led to material savings of around 15%.
