SABIC acquires majority stake in carbon nanotube business for energy storage applications

SABIC announced today thatáit has taken aámajority stake ináBlack Diamond Structures (ôBDSö), aánanotechnology company established iná2014. BDS produces andácommercializes MOLECULAR REBAR«, aáproprietary technology ofámodified carbon nanotubes thatáoffers great potentialáforáenhancing theáperformance ofáenergy storage applications using lead-acid andálithium-ion batteries.

BDS is being added asápart ofáSABICĺs Specialties business. According toáAlan Leung, Vice President ofáSpecialties, theácarbon nanotube technology ofáBDS willáallow Specialties toáaddress severaládemanding challenges inátheáenergy storage market. Ináparticular, BDS provides game-changing benefits toábattery manufacturers looking forábreakthrough improvements inácharge rates, battery cycle life andáenergy density.

Conventionalácarbon nanotubes are known forátheir tendency toáget entangled, cake andáhold high residualáimpurities, limiting their capabilities ofáenhancing electricaláandámechanicalámaterialáproperties inárealáworld applications.
